When I became a mother to my son, it prompted deep reflection on the kind of man I hoped he would become. I envisioned him as a loving, honest, hardworking individual who embodies care and intelligence.

With these thoughts weighing on my mind, I started to compare the men in my life and how I perceived their character. My dad exemplifies the qualities I wish for my son—he is a fantastic father, diligent, and truthful, essentially everything I aspire for my son to be. My brother embodies many of these traits, although he struggles a bit with hard work, but that’s a different story. However, when I took time to contemplate the kind of man my son’s father was, I came to significant realizations.

I needed to sit down and assess my life and what truly mattered to me. I had this little boy I wished to nurture, love, protect, and teach all the right lessons, but then there was his dad. While he worked, he lacked enthusiasm for it, and he drank all day, becoming increasingly drunk each night. His behavior was unkind towards me, and I often wondered why I stayed with him, other than my genuine love and hope for his change. However, after having my son, I recognized that I did not want him to emulate his father’s lifestyle at that time. I made the decision to change my circumstances and leave.

Regardless of his biological connection, I could not allow him to become a negative influence or teach my son the wrong values simply because of his DNA. I wanted a better life for both of us, so I chose to walk away.It was a difficult decision, but ultimately, it was about creating a future where my son could thrive surrounded by positive role models. I wanted him to grow up knowing that love is not just about words but actions, that respect and kindness are essential, and that it is never too late to change the path we’re on.

As I started this new chapter, I focused on building a supportive community for us, filled with family and friends who shared the values I wanted to instill in my son. I sought out experiences and opportunities that would enrich his understanding of the world and encourage his natural curiosity and kindness.

Every day, I remind myself that the journey of raising my son is an ongoing process, filled with challenges and joys. I strive to be the example he needs, showing him that strength comes from making tough choices and that love sometimes requires us to make sacrifices for the greater good. I am hopeful for the future, confident that with love, guidance, and the right influences, my son will grow into the man I know he can be—a beacon of integrity, compassion, and resilience.
